Hello Visual Communicators,

*******We have arrived at the end of the semester****************

I will be in Thursday morning, let’s take care of the seniors first. We can move back and forth between my office and 254. I guess everybody will be there finishing their work. Final projects should be turned in and mounted on your page. The purpose of the page originally was to be a professional portfolio. Some of you have moved in other directions that’s OK. As long as the page looks professional, that everything on it works and the concept looks professional.

You should be able to make this part of a portfolio presentation. The thing that’s mandatory is that the things I have asked you to do below are available on your page. The items that have been uploaded to VisCom S09 can be duplicated on your page, if they add to the professional appeal of your presentation.

*********** HELP*HELP***I want some people to video tape and make stills of a year-end party, that Dr Tyree’s Event Planning class is giving. The party is under the tent in front of CB Powell, time 4-7pm. Those of you trying to finish your writing credits may still be able to offer something to Prof Lamb for Black College View. This video or still photos would qualify for those of you finishing the assignments. But they must sill be digested and mounted on your page. I will take care of getting images to Dr Tyree. If you want writing credit you are still responsible for following through with your Professors. IT’S BEEN A HOOT. PEACE AND LOVE. CH******************

Hello Visual Communicators,

*******No class Thursday************ I will be at Blackburn, more below.***

******************SHOOT VIDEO, SHOOT VIDEO, SHOOT VIDEO*************

How are we doing with our final projects. There is no more lecturing to be done. As you know I can talk for ever. I’d like to bring that to a close. We have one more week I believe. So we should look at some videos next week, and do critiques. If you have questions about your final projects please contact me.

*** I am going to cancel class on Thursday. The Porter Colloquium is taking place in Blackburn, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. It is the premier national conference on African- American American and Art of the African Diaspora. I will be attending and unavailable for class that day or Friday.

Please register online and attend if you are interested in Black Art. <http://portercolloquium.org/colloquium/2009/colloquium-program/> Porter was a famous Howard Professor of Art. This confab represents his scholarship well, and serves our community, as a focus of Academic pursuit in the realm of our visual creative activities. Please check the schedule at the above address.

If you need to enhance your grade, please consider a paper on one of the sessions. This qualifies as visual communication. The schedule is at the URL above and registration is linked there. Go online and register first, please. If you would like to get credit for a report on a Colloquium presentation (grade enhancement,) please seek my approval first. CH

David Mc. sent a link to a story about the AP fighting online use of it’s content. <http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0409/21136.html > It’s worth a read in light of yesterday’s discussion of legalities in Intellectual Property arena. CH

VisCom Notes 04.09.09a

VisCom Notes
04.09.09a

Hello Visual Communicators,

1.)  Today- I will shoot portraits of anyone who needs them for their resume or other business files. Which means we can go back to 244 and play under the lights. Sorry, about the late notice, we talked briefly about it last week. I am suggesting that if this web page you are creating qualifies as a Portfolio, it would help to have a resume attached. This portrait could add to the professional quality of the document.

2.) 9:40am- Prof. O. Dukes is supposed to have a guest speaker, we have been invited. Would someone like to shoot video of the presentation? Perhaps as their assignment? Those of you who aren’t getting pictures made may want to hear or shoot the event (video, stills, audio?)

3.) 11:30 to 1pm- Sam Pollard, Producer, Director, Editor, will be giving a Master Class in Studio A in WHUT. If you are interested in film, at any level, this could prove to be an
informative and/ or inspiring talk. I’m going to try to make it.

Last week I gave an assignment to shoot video. It is an assignment that is in the syllabus and was due Tuesday, but I took the time to talk about larger issues. The assignment stands. A 2-3 minute video. This does not need to be the highest quality, if it is not part of your final project. If it is, you should practice before you start to shoot. I asked you to read a number of video pieces (listed below) and I am now asking you to refer to the Knight Digital Media Center Tutorial for Final Cut. You will need this, to get started editing. I don’t know if Frederic Kendrick will be doing anymore workshops. He is at the end of his semester, too. He will be doing considerable writing for his own courses and may well be swamped the rest of the semester. Vision, focus, hard work AND good luck are one formula for success.

These are your assignments

  1. Open Google Accounts- Gmail, Picasa (Picasaweb.google.com), Blogger (some are using other Blog sites)
  2. Photograph- a person you do not know, get names. They should be living their lives and you should have a caption (who,What, When Why...)

VisCom Notes 04.02.09a

VisCom Notes
04.02.09a

Hello Visual Communicators,

Thursday April 2: we’ll do more familiarization with video camera, the faculty retreat last Friday and the one man-band concept. ***See B&H article about Chandler Griffin <http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/find/newsLetter/Chandler-Griffin.jsp > That is, one person does it all. There was an add from a TV station in Jacksonville in an earlier “notes.” The ad suggests that news outlets are hiring people who can do everything. While the dissolution of traditional media is frightening for those of us who learned it the old way, you should not be frightened. This a once a century opportunity for you to design a future, your future and those of us around you.

Some of the most important innovations of recent years have been conceptualized and designed by people in your age group: Facebook, Napster, Apple computer, Microsoft were all started by people during their undergrad years. But be clear about something, no one is going to carry you. You will have to teach yourself everything. We can provide workshops like labs. But, my classes are about concepts, not a place for you practice process, that you are supposed to master in your own time.

There is a consistent fear, on the part of the faculty, that the student body ( well, some 50% of you) will not be prepared to deal with this new world. I think most of you will deal with the world “out there” in time. The problem is who will running your lives and will you be able to do the things you love, with your time on earth. Some may say that I don’t know my passions, well you learn them by trying the things that interest you. Take a chance, invest your time, now. You will find interests that will carry to the great beyond.

There are a number pieces on shooting video in prior assignments (see below,) now’s the time top put those lessons to use. Move from Knowledge or learning, through experience, to wisdom. (That’s the real knowing.) Check out a video camera today and shoot some video. The assignment for next TUESDAY is a 3 minute video piece, so that we may critique and move toward your final assignments. Remember those.

WEBSITE Design TODAY (4/2) PROF JAMAL SULLIVAN  teaches in the Electronic Studio of the Fine Arts Dept. This is part of our workshop series. He will be working in “Dreamweaver” which is available on our machines. I don’t know how many more times this will happen so get to it if you can.
